3 Ingredient Play-Dough

Its winter in Minnesota and that means loads of indoor play. The winter weather this year has been anything but normal- leaving much to desire for outdoor winter activities with almost zero snowfall.

If your kids are anything like mine, sensory play is an all time winter favorite! There are so many benefits of sensory play for children- brain development, enhances memory, allows for complex tasks and problem solving, and develops fine motor skills. Not to mention it's just fun! Add their favorite minature action figures or LOL dolls to the table and you've cued an afternoon of many laughable moments and awkward story lines.

My middle kiddo asked for play dough this weekend and to our dismay we had no salt or corn starch on hand. So we decided to experiment and achieved success.

This playdough recipe is soft (and even softer if you use corn starch). It's also a tad stretchy- almost a cross between play dough and slime. Using a scented lotion or essential oils enhaces the sensory play and as an added bonus, this play dough moisturizes those little hands as they play.

I hope your kiddos enjoy this experiment as much as mine did!

Supplies:

  • 2 cups of flour or corn starch

  • 1 cup of lotion, bonus if scented

  • Food coloring

  • (OPTIONAL) Essential oil, if you are not using a scented lotion

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl mix the lotion, food coloring, and essential oil.

  2. Mix in the flour or corn starch with a fork until beads form.

  3. Knead the mixture by hand until fully mixed and ready for play. If mixture seems too dry after kneading apply a tablespoon more lotion and knead again until desired consistency.

  4. Store in a gallon ziplock bag for 2 weeks.
